Theia is one of New Zealand pop music’s most progressive and idiosyncratic acts. Her burgeoning catalogue of songs showcases an artist who is unafraid to push boundaries and who is here to stay.
“There’s no mistake: Theia is an artist who is making edgy, socially-conscious and deeply catchy pop music.” - The Spinoff, April 2019
Haling from Christchurch, the avant-pop artist and songwriter has been making waves since she first emerged in 2015 with her the exquisite R’n’B-infused ‘Silver Second’, produced by Alex Hope (Troye Sivan, Broods).
Theia followed it up in 2016 with her breakout hit ‘Roam’, which firmed up her reputation on the international stage as an ‘artist to watch’ and set the scene for the release of her critically acclaimed debut self-titled EP, which earned her three nominations at the 2017 New Zealand Music Awards and a nod for ‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ at the 2017 Georgie Awards.
‘Roam’, ‘Champagne Supernova’ and ‘Treat You’ - all songs from the EP - were played on Top 40 radio in New Zealand with ‘Roam’ going on to become one of the most played songs by a New Zealand artist in 2016/17. ‘Roam’ and ‘Treat You’ also received widespread Top 40 radio play in Asia.
The EP has since gone on to be streamed close to 15 million times on Spotify, with hundreds of thousands of more streams on other platforms such as You Tube and Apple Music.
Theia returned in 2018 with new music, including the hit singles ‘Bye Bye’ and ‘Candy’. In April 2020, she released her second EP, NOT YOUR PRINCESS, to critical acclaim.
“Six tracks of exquisite pop music that drifts into uncharted territory... The title song is a triumph, while the full package is completed by the impish inquisitions of 'Telling Everyone My Name' and ‘Honest'
- Clash Magazine, April 2019
“Not Your Princess takes Theia into harder, more electro territory, incorporating vibes from R&B and rap into a blend just as mesmerising as her earlier releases”
- Women in Pop, April 2019
“The music enters the room attitude and energy first, but never loses sight of the underlying hooks; it’s a clear progression in risk-taking from her first EP but no less mature”
- The Spinoff, April 2019
“Not Your Princess highlights Theia’s maturity and her fearless approach to music, not allowing herself to be confined by any one genre, and broaching topics which might not be ‘mainstream’ but which will be considered important to many fans.”
– Elsewhere, May 2019
The EP’s singles ‘Bye Bye’, ‘Bad Idea’, ‘Candy’ and ’Not Your Princess’ received commercial radio play in New Zealand and debuted on multiple Spotify New Music Friday playlists around the world, amassing more than a million streams before the EP’s official release on April 12. The EP’s focus single ‘Honest’ - a collaboration with Australian artist Alice Ivy - debuted on NMF playlists in NZ/AU, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia. The NOT YOUR PRINCESS EP has now had more than 1.5 million streams.
Theia’s success has taken her across the globe, playing shows in Australia, Asia and the United States. Meanwhile on home soil, in 2017 she embarked on her own headline tour and played to massive crowds at some of NZ’s biggest summer festivals, including Rhythm & Vines, Homegrown, Electric Avenue, Soundsplash and Bay Dreams. She also opened for Sia at Mt Smart in Auckland alongside Charli XCX and MO, as well as supporting Portugal. The Man at the Powerstation in early 2018.
